Supermodel Gives Evidence at War Crimes Trial

Supermodel Naomi Campbell has appeared at the war crimes trial of former Liberian leader Charles Taylor in the Hague.

She was summoned by the prosecution to back claims that Taylor was given diamonds by rebels in Sierra Leone in 1997, which he then used to buy weapons.

The so-called “blood diamond” incident is said to have taken place after a charity dinner with Nelson Mandela in South Africa at which Charles Taylor was present.

Taylor was heavily involved in Liberia’s civil war from 1989 before being elected president in 1997. He governed for six years before heading into exile in Nigeria.

He denies all 11 charges of war crimes allegedly committed during the brutal conflict in Sierra Leone, in which more than 250,000 people were killed.

Ms. Campbell told the hearing it was an ‘inconvenience’ for her to appear at the court.

Yes Naomi. Bringing war criminals to justice is so inconvenient, isn’t it?
